What is an IRS Enrolled Agent?

Enrolled agents (EAs) are federally-authorized tax practitioners who have demonstrated technical competence in tax law and are the only taxpayer representatives licensed to practice by the United States government. Only EAs, attorneys and CPAs may represent taxpayers without limitation before the IRS. EAs advise and represent taxpayers who are being examined by IRS, taxpayers who are unable to pay, and taxpayers who wish to avoid or recover penalties. EAs prepare tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts and any other entities with tax-reporting requirements.
Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all EAs specialize in taxation and are required by the federal government to maintain their professional skills with continuing professional education.

  • Knowledge: Enrolled agents are tax professionals who have proven their proficiency in tax law and regulations by passing a challenging IRS exam. They have a thorough understanding of tax laws, rules, and processes, which can help them find deductions and credits that may be accessible to you and make sure you are adhering to all tax standards.

  • Representation: Enrolled agents have the legal right to represent you in IRS audits, collections, and appeals. This implies that your enrolled agent can represent you before the IRS and assist you in resolving any tax concerns if you are under audit or have other tax-related problems.

  • Convenience: Enrolled agents are available all year long, not just during tax season, to help you with tax-related difficulties. Also, they can assist you with tax planning so that you can reduce your tax obligation for the upcoming year.

  • Accuracy: Enrolled agents are educated to complete tax returns quickly and properly, which can assist you in avoiding costly errors that could lead to an audit or incur penalties or fines.

  • Ease of mind: When you file your taxes through an enrolled agent, you can rest easy knowing that your return was completed by a skilled expert who has your best interests in mind. This will help you avoid costly mistakes that could put you in a difficult financial situation and decrease the worry and anguish that come with tax season.
